Plaice - rødspette (Pleuronectes platessa)

Pollock - lyr (Pollachius pollachius)

Large pollock cruising below at 50 to 60 feet

The bottom is predominately comprised of kelp (Laminaria sp.) covered rock with interspersed areas of sand. The majority of fishing was along or at the bottom of steep rock walls. For the purposes of the contest, cod/torsk and pollock/lyr (Pollachius pollachius) were the main fish targeted. Cod were found on the bottom within the kelp. Pollock were found above the kelp and swimming mid-water. Although flatfish including the orange-spotted plaice/rødspette (Pleuronectes platessa) are common in the sandy areas, none were taken during the tournament.

Other fish in the area not eligible for the tournament included ballan wrasse/berggylt (Labrus bergylta) and monkfish/breiflabb (Lophius piscatorius). The ballan wrasse is in the same family as tautog (Tautoga onitis). The one I shot behaved and tasted similar to tautog. Since there are abundant cod and pollock, the wrasse is not a considerd a desirable fish.
